Halifax

Why I Love Halifax

Halifax captures you immediately with its salty sea breeze and the genuine warmth of its people. I still remember wandering along the Halifax Waterfront and feeling completely at peace. There's something magical about watching ships glide into the harbor as you sip on a hot coffee from one of the local cafes. For me, Halifax is a blend of rich history, laid-back vibes, and an inspiring creative spirit that you can find in its art galleries and markets. It's the kind of place that brings out the storyteller in you — every corner has a tale waiting to be uncovered.

Quick Facts

Halifax

Getting There

Flying into Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is your best bet. Air Canada and WestJet often have competitive prices. From New York, you're looking at a direct flight of about two hours. If you're coming from London, brace for a longer journey, around six hours, usually with a stopover. Check visa requirements if you're not from the U.S. or Europe.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Halifax Waterfront

One of my favourite things to do here is wander along the Halifax Waterfront. It's always bustling with energy, full of quirky shops, street performers, and food stalls. Grab a BeaverTails pastry while you enjoy the views of the harbor. Book with Viator

Visit the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

This museum is a moving tribute to Canada's multicultural story. I found myself lost in the stories of immigrants, understanding how they shaped the nation. It's an eye-opening experience you shouldn't miss. Book with GetYourGuide

Stroll through the Halifax Public Gardens

These Victorian gardens are a peaceful oasis in the city. Walking here feels like stepping back in time with its bandstand and floral displays. Perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try The Bicycle Thief for their incredible Italian fare with a maritime twist. The lobster linguine is a must!

Don't leave without eating at The Coastal Café for breakfast. Their "Elvis" French toast with peanut butter and bacon is unforgettable.

For a local favorite, hit up The Wooden Monkey. It's all about fresh, organic ingredients, and the nut burger is just divine.

>Honest Local Tips

Embrace the Weather: Halifax weather can be unpredictable. Layer up, and always pack an umbrella!

Ferry to Dartmouth: For a scenic and cheap experience, take the ferry to Dartmouth. It's just a short ride, and you'll get great views of the city.

Halifax Citadel: If you're into history, the Citadel is a must, but try to go early to avoid crowds.

Local Breweries: Halifax has fantastic craft breweries. Don't miss trying a local beer at Alexander Keith's Brewery.

Parking in Downtown: If you're driving, parking can be tricky. Opt for public transport or find accommodation with parking included.

Mistake I Made: I underestimated the sheer number of unique spots to visit. Have a loose itinerary, but leave room for spontaneous adventures!

>Getting Around

Walking is the best way to get around downtown Halifax since everything is relatively close. For farther distances, Metro Transit buses are reliable and inexpensive. Grab the “Transit 360” app for schedules. Taxis and ride-shares are easily available too. Always check your fare estimate beforehand as the prices can rack up.

>Is Halifax Worth It?

Absolutely, Halifax is perfect for those who love a mix of history, culture, and coastal charm. It's great for relaxed travelers who aren't in a rush to check off tourist traps but want to soak in the vibe of a truly genuine Canadian city. If you’re after endless nightlife or massive urban crowds, you might not find Halifax as exciting. But I'm already planning my next trip back — there's so much to explore and enjoy at a leisurely pace.
