Why I Love Montreal
Montreal delights the senses in ways few places do. I still remember stepping onto the cobblestones of Old Montreal, where the scent of fresh croissants mingles with the crisp air, and the vibrant whispers of French fill the streets. There’s an energy here that feels both old-world and cutting-edge, with art and creativity seeping out of every corner. Whether it's the comforting coziness of a café in the Plateau or the buzzing nightlife on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Montreal has this knack for wrapping you up in its warmth and charm. You’ll find a piece of your heart here, just like I did.

>Where to EatYou have to try Schwartz’s Deli for their iconic smoked meat sandwich. The vibe is bustling and no-frills, but the flavors are unforgettable. Next, don’t leave without dining at L'Express. The steak frites pair perfectly with a glass of red, all in a classic French bistro atmosphere. For a chic brunch, Make your way to Olive et Gourmando — their pastries and sandwiches are divine.
>Honest Local TipsMind the Language: While most people speak English, a little bit of French goes a long way. Start with “Bonjour” (hello) and you’ll receive a warmer reception.
Apps to Use: Download the STM app for metro schedules and maps. Super handy!
Avoid Rush Hour Madness: The metro can be packed during rush hours (8-9 AM and 4:30-6 PM). Give it a miss if you can.
Parking Woes: If you drive in, parking can be scarce and expensive downtown. Public transit is a great alternative.
Winter Is Serious Business: If you visit in winter, pack serious layers. The cold and wind are no joke!
Cultural Mix-Up: Keep your U.S. dollar expectations in check — tipping is the norm here too, at around 15-20%.
Overlooked Gem: Visit the murals on Boulevard Saint-Laurent; they’re an ever-changing canvas of the city’s creativity.
>Getting AroundGetting around Montreal is straightforward. The metro system is efficient and inexpensive at $3.50 CAD per ride. Consider grabbing a day pass for $10 CAD if you’re exploring a lot. For short distances, Bixi bikes are fantastic, especially in warmer months. Uber is available, but I found walking to often be the most enjoyable way to soak in the city's ambiance.
>Is Montreal Worth It?Absolutely! Montreal is perfect for those who love culture, history, and vibrant city life without the hustle of larger metropolises. It’s a place where you can savor life at your own pace, whether you’re sipping coffee in Mile End or dancing the night away at a downtown club. But if you’re not a fan of the cold or prefer a strictly English-speaking environment, consider visiting in the warmer months or brushing up on a few French phrases. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
