Perth

Why I Love Perth

There's a moment in Perth just as the sun dips below the Indian Ocean, bathing the city in golden hues and highlighting the skyline against a pastel sky. It's pure magic. I fell in love with Perth's laid-back vibe, the perfect blend of city life with nature just a heartbeat away. Strolling through Kings Park gives you sweeping views that make you feel on top of the world. It's a place where time slows, where sipping a coffee by the Swan River or catching a live band in one of its vibrant pubs feels like a tiny slice of paradise.

Quick Facts

Perth

Getting There

Flying into Perth is pretty straightforward. Perth Airport (PER) is the main gateway, connecting through major airlines like Qantas, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines. From London, you're looking at about 17 hours, while New York is closer to an entire day with layovers. Dubai offers a direct route in around 11 hours. Keep an eye out for deals, especially during the shoulder seasons. For entry, make sure you have an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) if you’re not an Aussie or Kiwi.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

You can't go wrong with Billabong Backpackers Resort. It's got this cool, social vibe with a pool, and it's just a short stroll to great cafes and bars in Northbridge. The rooms are clean, and you often meet fellow travelers to swap stories with. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

The Alex Hotel is a favorite of mine. It’s got this boutique charm and is situated right in the cultural heart of Perth. They have a killer rooftop terrace where you can enjoy wine and nibbles. Perfect for a romantic getaway or solo travelling with style. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For luxury, COMO The Treasury takes the cake. It blends old-world grandeur with modern comforts flawlessly. The service? Impeccable. And the rooms are a dream, especially after a long day exploring. You'll feel utterly pampered. Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Picnic at Kings Park

One of my favorite things to do is pack a picnic and head to Kings Park. The views are jaw-dropping, and the atmosphere is just perfect for unwinding. Plus, the botanical gardens are full of native wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring. Book with Viator

Exploring Fremantle Markets

You have to check out Fremantle Markets. It's like a sensory overload — the smell of fresh coffee, the sound of buskers, and stalls bursting with unique crafts. It's where I found the best handmade trinket for a friend. Book with GetYourGuide

Swan Valley Wine Tours

A wine tour in Swan Valley is a must. Sipping on local Shiraz while soaking in vineyard views — it's heavenly. Plus, they often include cheese and chocolate stops that are utterly indulgent. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle for the ultimate casual vibe — their wood-fired pizzas are sensational, and a beer paddle is a must. For something swanky, dine at Wildflower; their seasonal dishes are divine. And don’t leave without grabbing brunch at Flora & Fauna, where the vegan pancakes are a game-changer.

>Honest Local Tips

Public Transport SmartRider: Grab a SmartRider card for cheaper fares on buses and trains. Trust me, it saves time and money.

Free Transit Zone: In the CBD area, buses are free! Just hop on and off; it's a great way to explore.

Sun Protection is Key: The sun can be fierce, even on cloudy days. A good hat and sunscreen are lifesavers.

Avoiding the Pigeons: Eating outdoors? Watch out for bold pigeons; they show no mercy!

Stay Hydrated: The heat can be deceiving; keep a water bottle handy.

Plan for Sundays: Perth can be a ghost town on Sunday mornings. Plan activities for later in the day.

I Wish I Knew About Hokey Pokey Ice Cream: Seriously, don't leave without trying this local treat. Life-changing.

>Getting Around

Perth has an efficient public transport system. Use the Transperth app for schedules and routes. Renting a car is great for road trips outside the city, but within, public transport is cheaper. A single bus ticket is around $3 AUD. Watch out for surge pricing on rideshares during peak hours.

>Is Perth Worth It?

Absolutely! Perth is perfect for beach lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone looking to escape the hustle. It's a city that offers both adventure and relaxation, with a laid-back charm that wins your heart. If you thrive on nightlife or prefer bustling urban centers, it might not be your top pick. But for stunning natural beauty and friendly locals, I'd return in a heartbeat.
